Rene A.V. Saguisag gave us a brief backgrounder on the advent of the raised-fist gesture which was, and still is, a symbol of protest (“‘Pure evil’ a kinder description,” Opinion, 10/29/16). He finds its adoption by President Duterte and the members of his Cabinet comical, if not arrogant, unless they want to underscore the chief executive’s “kamay na bakal” policy.
Saguisag suggested, instead, that the present administration stick to the “dirty finger-you-are No. 1” gesture. He intimated, in this regard, that he knows somebody who is qualified to rehearse and drill the Cabinet.
Does Saguisag have in mind Teodoro L. Locsin Jr., our ambassador to the United Nations, seen in action in a photo that appeared in the Jan. 26, 1992, issue of Tempo? Lately, Locsin was also on Facebook, defending the President from his detractors, with the same dirty-finger gesture (subsequently deleted).
