I read with dismay Randy David’s romantic defense of the conduct of the leftist government of Greece on how to best deal with their public debt. Whereas Greece’s radical left government is bold and all that is good, he portrays the multilateral lenders as greedy, socially irresponsible and uncaring “gods of global finance.” His last paragraph betrays him as a member of the Freedom from Debt Coalition (“The Greek way: from Solon to Varoufakis,” Opinion, 7/9/15).
I believe that the notion that one does not have to honor one’s debt as long as there is proof that the proceeds were spent irresponsibly is preposterous! How do you go about deciding which of the public debt went to corruption and which went to public programs? Thank God, President Corazon Aquino did not listen to these leftist jesters in her administration. Look where the Philippine economy is now. Indeed, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
