Halfhearted green policies

/ 12:43 AM July 16, 2012

This letter is meant to point out halfhearted policies of Muntinlupa City, where our old home is located.

Muntinlupa’s policy banning the use of plastics by every establishment should be lauded.

Mayor Aldrin San Pedro even closed down a bakeshop at the Ayala Town Center because it did not comply with this policy. But this policy seems half-baked because only the so-called bags are disallowed; transparent plastics are tolerated especially for perishable products. If the city government is really serious with its BYOB (Bring Your Own Bayong) campaign, it should also ask people to bring their own containers when they go buying  meat and fish at wet and supermarkets.

This brings me to the related topic of garbage disposal. The city government is not seriously implementing its policies on garbage segregation, compost-making and no garbage-burning in backyards.

I usually jog around the outskirts of the Bureau of Corrections, and I am usually met with the burning stench of garbage every morning. Although, it is a good idea to encourage jail inmates to pick up trash, trim down growing shrubs and grasses, it is infuriating to see the prisoners burning them instead of making a compost out of them.

The Muntinlupa government should take its environmental policies more seriously if it really cares for the preservation of Mother Earth and the health of all its citizens.
