Signs along the way

The story is told about a man who saw a sign which had the name of a doctor, and below was written “Radiologist.” Unable to discern what it meant, he asked his companion: “Is the doctor on AM or FM band?”

In today’s Gospel (Mk. 13:24-32), Jesus talks about the end time, and the signs that will accompany its coming. Through these signs, we can figure out that the time is near, but as to the exact day or hour, we will not know. Yes, no matter how smart, how intelligent or how well equipped we are, there will always be that great unknown which we can understand only by faith.

I admire, and I am impressed by, intelligent and bright people. I praise God for their special gift from Him. But they are a big turn-off when they become self-centered and arrogant because of intellectual pride. In all things, let us not forget the Giver of our talents, blessings and gifts.

We are coming toward the “end time” of the liturgical year, reminding us that all things will come to an end. Our life will definitely end, sooner or later. Such is our helpless human condition, but not hopeless, because of our faith in the Lord’s promise of eternal life and a world without end.

Yes, life goes on. Eternity is waiting.

“Did I live a meaningful life?” This is the final question, the ultimate measure of the way we lived our lives. We have the choice to live a meaningful life, or to live a life in vain and in shame. As we grow on, again and again, the Lord will give us signs and reminders along the way to do good and avoid evil.

By the way, speaking of signs, someone said that there are two signs that we are getting old. One is when we begin to be forgetful. Two, is… what was it again?! Whatever. But two things that we must not forget as we grow older: One, to be grateful for the past. Two, to be trusting in God’s love for the future.

Still on the subject of signs, someone also said that a man is growing old when he forgets to zip up. And he is really old if he forgets to zip down! As we encounter the challenge of growing older, let us not be so focused on our own travails and miseries. There are people around us who have bigger challenges. Let us reach out. Let us share the sunshine, and let the sunshine in.

Next Sunday is the Solemnity of Christ, the King. Sharing with you this prayer of consecration of ourselves, our country and our people to Christ, our Lord and King:

Christ our King, we are Your servants, and You are our Lord and King. We place ourselves, our families, our country, our people under Your special care and protection. Set us free from drugs, violence, injustice and corruption, which go against Your kingdom of peace, goodness and righteousness. Give us servant leaders, men and women who keep Your commandments, and who do their mission with dedication, humility and honesty. May we all help in building and spreading Your kingdom, for You are our Lord and King. Amen.
