Absolute power corrupts absolutely

We would like to take exception to the opinion of Jerry Uy (“CJ Sereno living a ‘lavish’ lifestyle,” Letters, 10/21/17), who tried to debunk the reported extravagance of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, known to him personally as one who “lives within
her means,” etc.

While we do not question his judgment based on his “long-time” friendship and past personal experience with the Sereno family, Uy may have forgotten how “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” History is replete with stories of once modest, humble and kind human beings turning into monsters when they get enthroned in positions of power and privilege.

One may be frugal with his own hard-earned money. However, it is another thing with money he has not earned but is there for the spending. Just take a look at how almost all of our government officials are wasting the people’s money on very expensive but totally useless projects.

Sereno may never for a moment even think of buying a bullet-proof luxury vehicle worth millions if that expense came from her own pocket. But since it was people’s money, what the heck! Nobody really believes such purchase was necessitated by any threat to her life. It seemed more like a craving for pomp and pageantry.
