Chief justice not in line of succession

/ 12:01 AM March 02, 2015

A reader, George del Mar, repeated the misconception that the unelected chief justice is in the line of succession to the presidency (“The Cojuangcos’ ‘loony idea,’” Opinion, 2/25/15). The succession is limited to the elected vice president, Senate president and House speaker.

It should not be hard to elect a new Senate president or House speaker, anyway, who will be in the line; so there’s no need for a fifth.

Tough to imagine a State of the Nation Address being delivered at the Bataan Nuclear Plant with the chief justice absent, and then an earthquake sinks the plant into the sea.
