Everyone must help ensure Pope’s safety in PH during his visit

01:56 AM November 19, 2014

However overwhelmed we are with excitement over the coming papal visit, we should be vigilant. The Islamic State is reportedly establishing terrorist cells here in the country and some of its members are here. We do not know who they are and what they are up to, but we are sure these jihadists are cooking up something for Pope Francis’ visit.

Aside from deploying more soldiers and policemen, the government, through the Bureau of Immigration, should double its efforts at looking out for possible Islamic State supporters slipping into the country. Also, banks and other financial institutions should watch out for people depositing large amounts as these may be used by jihadists for terrorist activities.

In short, Malacañang, in close coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, must leave no stone unturned in ensuring the security of the Pope before and during, and even after, his visit in January. The Pope’s visit to the Philippines, during which he is expected to meet with poor people and “Yolanda” survivors, is a rare event for us Filipinos. Let’s welcome him with warmth and love, and help in ensuring his safety.
