Show we care for our nation

We Filipinos are oftentimes guilty of being complacent, even apathetic, to what is happening around us. If we feel we are not affected by social and political issues, we don’t pay them any mind. We go on with our lives and usual routines: We eat, go malling, sleep and drink, go on vacations. But this normal existence can change suddenly, if something untoward happens—as it happened in Tacloban, where the rich and poor alike fell victim to the same suffering and devastation, and now have a better understanding of what it is like to suffer and lose everything in just an instant.

We desire change, abhor corruption, want peace, but we just sit and watch what is happening. We have the “don’t care” attitude at times. We lack involvement and participation in the affairs of our nation. We should give our two cents worth, as they say. We can do this by, at the least, giving our views and opinions on important issues of national interest, and letting our voices be heard. A good word or a condemnation will make a difference to show others that Filipinos think and care.

Some of us have joined indignation rallies against corruption, but after that we did nothing more. We tend to forget we have a role to play in society.

We can start by thanking our teachers and educators, environmentalists, philanthropists, doctors, engineers and all others involved in making our country livable, peaceful and stable. And not to forget the soldiers and policemen who are faithfully doing their job with dedication and commitment. Rest assured, our words would mean a lot to them.
