China’s recklessness only inviting enemies

/ 07:51 PM February 02, 2014

Japan’s call for the world to face up to “assertive” China should be heeded by all peace-loving nations, especially by the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), where China’s bullying is most brazen. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is right, especially because China’s continuing incursions are done with military backing. China’s aggressiveness could destabilize the region and upset Asia’s economy (including its own), and even the international markets.

As it is, China has been using force and coercion, totally discarding diplomacy, dialogue and the rule of the law. China hinted it is willing to discuss with the Philippines their opposing claims to disputed islands, which our leaders rightly rejected.

The South China Sea is not owned solely by China. Most of it has always been an open sea for navigation and commerce. China should realize that by its reckless insistence on its baseless claims, it is only inviting enemies. China must work with its Asean neighbors for peace and prosperity and stop navigating a policy of territorial expansion and instead focus on strengthening economic relations and partnerships with other nations and on being a trustworthy and reliable friend to the world.
