Galang, first Filipino anthropologist

This is in reference to the news item titled “First PH anthropologist dies” (News, 10/31/13).

With due respect, Dr. Felipe Landa Jocano was not the country’s first anthropologist.

Ricardo Espiritu Galang, PhD, was probably the first one. He was professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology, University of the Philippines long before World War II. He was my granduncle.
