Aviles an inspiration for fellow cadets, Filipinos

I feel very happy for Philippine Military Academy cadet Alfonso Aviles and his family. I saw his picture in the newspaper—standing, stable and smiling. I followed his story because his act was a rare display of bravery for one so young, someone who dreams of becoming a soldier. I am a frustrated wannabe PMAer, having enrolled in a Journalism course instead.

Cadet Aviles was given a much deserved Bronze Cross Medal for “demonstrating extraordinary courage and bravery by attempting to disarm the robber, disregarding his personal safety, for others,” as his citation read. The simple but meaningful awards ceremony held at the V. Luna Medical Center was truly moving. His parents shed tears of pride and joy.

Cadet Aviles is an inspiration not only to his fellow cadets and the youth but also to all Filipinos. Young as he is, two months ago he threw caution to the wind to help a fellow jeepney passenger who was being held up. He was shot in the scuffle but survived.

The PMA bull ring he lost, which means so much to all PMA cadets, was also replaced and it was as though he never lost it. This was a very warm gesture from PMA Superintendent Maj. Gen. Alfredo Peralta Jr. and the rest of the PMA.

It may take some time for him to completely recover physically and spiritually, but he is going there. What is important is that he is on the way to recovery! And willing to sacrifice his life once again for others if need be.
