Hold US ambassador to account

Did US Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. base his statement about “tourists in pursuit of sex” on a survey with a valid sample and a carefully-worded questionnaire?

A posting at a press forum, forwarded by a friend, has this to say in essence:

Let us look at the facts objectively, please. Let us not quickly dismiss Rudy Asercion’s valid concern. Allow me to raise three direct questions:

1. Was Ambassador Thomas statement based on a scientifically-prepared survey? Let’s demand that he cite his basis. Without it, the statement would simply be sweeping, irresponsible and undiplomatic. Similarly, those who agree with him should cite a documented basis. Personal observations will not do. I have been frequently traversing Philippine-foreign routes for decades. I yet have to encounter visitors having the same view as Thomas’.

2. Was there a valid sample? The Philippines has about 3 million visitors a year. If you are to believe Thomas’ comments, about 1.4 million visitors come to the Philippines just to satisfy their lower instincts. Can Mabini Street in Manila, P. Burgos Street in Makati, and similar “tourist belt” areas accommodate such a huge influx of tourists?

3. If someone claims that there was a survey, how was the question on sex as the motive for the visit worded? Phrasing a question to elicit an unbiased answer is a challenge. Respondents would be hesitant to answer if sex was the reason for their visit. If the wording is not explicit, one cannot expect clear answers.

Conclusion? We doubt that there was a survey conducted on the subject.

Besides, it is not logical for the US government to allow the use of public funds for such a survey that has no bearing on US interests.

The defense of Thomas that he is a friend or gracious dancer misses the point. I welcome comments on/answers to the three questions above, especially from those who agree with Thomas. If Thomas can validate his claim, let us address the issue in a constructive way. If he cannot validate his claim, we should put him to task. The dignity, reputation and self-esteem of the Filipino people are at stake.
