Of ‘sons of god’ and men

/ 04:02 AM November 22, 2021

The news item “Duterte ally Apollo Quiboloy indicted for sex trafficking in US” (News, 11/19/21), should shock Filipinos, if only for the fact that President Duterte has all these years been seeking ”spiritual advice” from a man who calls himself the “Appointed Son of God.” To counter accusations that he is nothing but a lunatic, Quiboloy should have been able by now to produce a notarized document proving such an “appointment” to lay the question to rest!

Seriously, who does Mr. Duterte honor as his “God”? In gatherings with mosque worshippers, he joins their incantation “Allahu Akbar.” In the company of Catholic churchgoers like many of his Cabinet men and allies, he has no problem calling their “God” “stupid.” When he sits in a powwow with Quiboloy and his fanatics, he defers to the “wisdom” of their “God” spoken only through his “son.”

We are supposed to be proudly the only Christian nation in Asia (aside from East Timor), but with a President who is hopelessly confused about his notion of “God,” does anyone still wonder why this country is truly in godawful, deep shit?
