PNP ‘cleansing’ a hollow promise

/ 05:02 AM January 23, 2020

The promise of newly minted Philippine National Police chief Archie Gamboa to “cleanse” the ranks of bad elements is at best hackneyed.

I am tired of reading these kinds of “promises” from newly installed PNP chiefs. Who shall police the police? What can Gamboa do when he will be retired by the time he has become familiar with running his command? If the PNP is indeed serious about cleansing its ranks, the organization must start from the recruitment stage. Only candidates of strong moral character should be considered.

The cleansing promise is hollow if the recruitment program is not put in proper order. When the “padrino system” is the kalakaran in the PNP, when bribe-taking police officials are overseeing the selection and hiring process, it is guaranteed that this country will endure police disservice till kingdom come.
