Dialogue is never a waste of time

04:02 AM January 21, 2020

Notwithstanding the difficulties so far encountered in the long-drawn process of arriving at a resolution to the conflict between the National Democratic Front of the Philippines and the Philippine government, the resumption of the GRP-NDFP peace negotiations augurs well for 2020. It is indicative of the principals’ willingness to dialogue as an effective means in the pursuit of peace and progress for the country.

Flexibility in approach rather than rigidity in posture is called for, especially when what is at stake, what is at the heart of the negotiations, is the well-being of the Filipino people.

The resumption of peace talks is in order and always a step in the right direction. Similarly, every possible step to establish confidence in each other’s goodwill must be sought. The release of elderly and sick political prisoners and their reunification with their respective families is a move the government could easily undertake, both for humanitarian reasons and for confidence-building in the process of establishing a true and lasting peace.

While there might be reservations or skepticism regarding any positive results from the peace talks, assuming the goodwill of all concerned would assure a more positive outcome, if only for the sake of the common good. In our struggle for peace, truth and justice, no attempt at reaching an accord may be considered a waste of time and effort.
