Public office as family enterprise

Rose Bartolome should not lose hope about the party list system being such a mess after it was “bastardized” by the Supreme Court (“The party list: A grotesque phenomenon,” Letters, 6/11/19). Our own city mayor has his wife as vice mayor, his two siblings as councilors, his son as congressman — just trading places like musical chairs through the years to circumvent term limits. And now his daughter-in-law is “party list representative”! Obviously helping themselves to public funds at their disposal, they have become filthy rich from that “family enterprise.”

Recall only that the condonation doctrine enunciated by the Supreme Court in 1959, which exonerated crooked politicians upon their reelection and enabled them to be more corrupt, was struck down in 2015 for being such a “crock of sh-t”—after 56 years!

Needless to mention, some members of our city’s dynastic family had repeatedly been “beneficiaries” of that crazy ruling.

There is still a chance the “gods of Padre Faura” will come to their senses and trash the “bastardized” version of the party list system spawned by their “judicial amendment” to the law.
