Evaluate candidates critically

Let us remind ourselves that the work of a senator is to make laws.

We should not be hoodwinked by senatorial candidates who are popular because they take the stage to show off their singing and dancing skills, or clown around sharing bathroom jokes.

We should not be lured into voting for candidates endorsed by popular political leaders who are shown in pictures raising their bets’ hands, as if giving them their stamp of approval.

These are not the qualifications to become an efficient lawmaker, let alone a good senator.

Though these candidates cannot be faulted for trying to persuade us to vote for them, it is our responsibility to evaluate them critically. Asking ourselves the following questions may be helpful in choosing  the right candidates:

(1) What are their views in relation to the issues of the day?

(2) Who among them abide by the Comelec rules and regulations in conducting a fair campaign?

(3) Who among them have clear and responsive legislative agenda and priorities?

Simply put, let us vote for senatorial candidates not on the basis of popularity or endorsements, but based on our careful evaluation of their political platforms and overall character.
