Du30 to blame for ‘out-of-control’ situation

12:01 AM November 21, 2016

Who is President Duterte threatening when he speaks of suspending the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in view of the rise in criminality?

Is he threatening criminals? They couldn’t care less; they are already defying the law in spite of the punishment they know awaits them if they are caught. Besides, many are already being summarily killed, so what will a mere warning achieve?

Is he threatening law enforcers? They would love the move; it will make their life easier.

Is he threatening the general citizenry? Why threaten peace-loving people? In fact it is for the general citizenry to ask why government has not curbed lawlessness. Rather, it seems like lawlessness is being fomented by the brutal means that characterize the administration’s banner program—its war on the drug menace.

Mr. Duterte, you are now in charge and have been in charge for the past five months. Do not blame others for the situation which you say is out of control. Please reflect on your future moves after accepting that your tough talk and actions have not worked.
