Has Maria Clara left?
HAS OUR race been so diluted there no longer are authentic Filipinos? The reigning Miss Universe is a hybrid, the product of a German father and Filipino mother, while the new Miss Earth (“Miss PH-Earth bets asked: How can Duterte help?” News, 6/13/16) is also of Teutonic roots. And the current Miss Cebu has a Croat father. Obviously this is because of our colonial past, when Caucasian males easily mated with the nubile natives.
The photo of Miss Imelda Schweighart in her semi-naked glory, with her bosom spilling out of her top and her long legs splayed apart, is straight out of the Hollywood porn factory. It’s enough to make local males salivate and females feel inadequate while dreaming of acquiring similar dimensions by reconstructive means.
Should we all bask in the “reflected glory” brought by these sweet young things or just “tsk-tsk” at the long-lost Maria Clara ideals?
