Are we ready for a Duterte presidency?

/ 12:12 AM April 29, 2016

To many, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte articulates their collective frustrations and is their best chance to be freed from the shackles of the hypocritical, sham “Democracy of the Elite.” The diverse reactions to his growing popularity are an indication of the strong appeal of his nontraditional, unorthodox style of governance to our people, regardless of their economic status.

Expectedly so, he evokes both fear and hope in the hearts of many supporters and antagonists alike. This point of our evolving contemporary history has catapulted the man to where he is now. And the iniquitous system dominated by the ruling elite has shaped the man’s strong brand of leadership, which is perceived to be what this demoralized country sorely needs now.

In a way, Duterte’s unconventional style of leadership was forged by these uncertain, desperate, frustrating times brought about by decades of dominance by the ruling elite, and fueled by an ever-growing discontent at the grassroots.

Ultimately, it’s the people who will decide whether or not they are ready and ripe for a Duterte presidency. Either way, may God have mercy on us all.
