This is a reaction to Gabrielle M.M. Aguillera’s concern about “kababawan” (“Lea spoke truth in her ‘kababawan’ comment,” Opinion, 10/17/15).
I understand people who pride themselves in being profound (malalim). It is informational to read about the philosophy of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. It is educational to have some knowledge of Greek, Roman, Arthurian, Egyptian, Slavic and African mythology. It is edifying to read about Ludwig Van Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Bach, Berlioz, Liszt and Gioachino Rossini. It is enlightening to be acquainted with the literary brilliance of Virgil, Ovid, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Shakespeare, Cervantes and Montaigne. It is gratifying to know by heart the masterpieces of Rembrandt, Cezanne, Botticelli, Giorgione, Sanzio, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rubens, Goya, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh.
Finally, to read the Inquirer and ruminate on the problems confronting the nation.
Oh, come on, I need a respite from the deluge of profundity to elude the formation of stress-induced cancer cells.
