‘I did not train Tetangco, I learned a lot from him’

May I thank Joan Orendain for the nice article titled “At 94, ‘Mr. Global’ slows down a wee bit” (Sunday Biz, 9/27/15). But I must correct the following statement:

“‘Amando Tetangco isn’t just doing a good job, he’s doing a very good job,’ SyCip says emphatically, ‘I trained him, you know.’”

I did not train Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco. In fact, through the years I have learned a lot about banking and monetary theory from him. He has enabled the peso to take a major role in Southeast Asia and we are all thankful to him for being one of the best central bankers in the world.
