THIS IS in reference to the news story titled “Sariaya road project splits residents” (Across the Nation, 4/23/15), which reported that there was a revised plan for the road project in Sariaya, Quezon.
To clarify, the project is the construction of loading and unloading areas in three strategic spots of Sariaya. As to the preservation of historical sites and structures, the Department of Public Works and Highways is committed to observe its agreement with the Sariaya Heritage Society and the local government on the “cease and desist order” in relation thereto.
I have issued Department Order No. 138 series of 2014, directing our regional, district and project management units to closely coordinate with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts during the conduct of feasibility studies for the design and improvement of projects to ensure proper protection of historical sites in adherence to Republic Act No. 10066 or the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, as well as to prevent delays and revisions of vital projects during construction.
We recognize that while the government aims to provide infrastructure development across the country, the relics of the past are national treasures which must be preserved, restored and enhanced for the benefit of future generations.
