Binay in Jakarta: Coincidence or miscalculation?

Coinciding with the Asia-Africa Conference that Indonesia hosted in Jakarta, which President Aquino attended officially with other heads of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, was Vice President Jejomar Binay’s travel to Jakarta on a government mercy mission for a Filipina OFW sentenced to death for the smuggling of prohibited drugs.

While in Jakarta, international media covering the Asia-Africa Conference reported that Binay, airing his position on West Philippine Sea issues, contradicted that of the government of the Philippines, as expressed by the President.

The divergent positions caused international media to accord the matter greater prominence which made necessary the “clarification” (disclaimer) by Communication Secretary Herminio Coloma that the remarks expressed by Binay were the latter’s own personal views.

The “incident” merits top level resolution—if not confrontation—by our two top officials.

Binay’s covetousness has a Filipino vernacular term equivalent. He may have wetted his pants in the process.
