This is in reaction to the editorial “Victims too” (7/14/14). Yes, it is really a sad affair, this “Palestinian slaughter.” But it seems like the whole world approves of this. There is no voice of concern from the Europeans, there are only “lukewarm” expressions of concern from the United States, and not even a squeak from the United Nations can be heard. Truly tragic event for humanity.
Incidentally, the Philippine vote for the partition of Palestine was changed into “for” or “in favor” by then Philippine representative Carlos P. Romulo after a “call” from Washington. He said that his original position, which was “against,” was primarily based on moral grounds and that the United Nations should accept responsibility in enforcing a policy that ran counter to the nationalist aspirations of the people of Palestine.
Truly, Romulo was in touch with our own Filipino experience. I hope something will be written about our original position, though I am not suggesting in any way, shape or form that the Jewish refugees be left in the seas. It is the tragic consequences of what is happening right now that is hard to fathom. It has been said, one man’s terrorist is another man’s hero.
