20 gun deaths per day in PH

“5 DEAD as thrill killers strike in QC” (Metro, 5/12/14).

Gun deaths in the Philippines are a daily phenomenon, at an average of 20 each day. That’s 7,300 Filipinos per year or in 365 days.

The British daily The Guardian published in 2012 the annual number of homicides by firearm at 7,349 in the Philippines, citing data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Government’s progun policy —on trade, ownership and possession, most lately inscribed in Republic Act No. 10591—accounts for these deaths.

Pass the Citizen Protection Act. Gun control is crime control.
