BOY ABUNDA should be talking to, not for, the gays and lesbians of this country. He is the living proof—the best so far—that government, school, Church or labor does not harass, antagonize or discriminate against the gay society. Abunda should be telling Ang Ladlad leaders, “Hey guys, what’s all the fuss about this gay movement to consolidate, strengthen and empower the LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders) and get a seat in Congress? Look, I didn’t do any of that yet I am where I am now because I tried to live a normal Boy Abunda. I was never denied enrollment in the most exclusive if not expensive schools like the Ateneo, or employment by the largest network in media land.”
If Ateneo and ABS-CBN had not accepted Abunda—despite his IQ and innate ability to communicate and articulate—because, after all, he was not straight, then he has reasons to fight for gay rights because he was a victim of social discrimination and anti-gay labor policy. What the other 50,000 members or so of Ang Ladlad need is the example of Boy Abunda. What he represents, not what he preaches. Gays and lesbians need love, not congressional laws.
Whatever Abunda says now and prematurely will boomerang on the very movement he is espousing. He should call a spade a spade and not pretend to be fighting for gay and human rights when his words are simply talking of future “Abundant” politics.
