Pork brings down much-revered democratic institution

The Senate as an institution is now groaning under the weight of embarrassment caused by the pork barrel scandal.

A most revered parliamentary institution in our country’s political history, and touted as a training ground for future presidents, its sacred halls once reverberated with the speeches of statesmen like senators Quintin Paredes, Lorenzo Tañada, Lorenzo Sumulong, Jose Diokno, Cipriano Primicias,  Claro M. Recto,  Jose P. Laurel, Carlos P. Garcia and  Pedro Sabido.

Unfortunately, with the pork barrel scam now out in the open, the glory days and grandeur of the Philippine Senate is no more; its image is now sullied with the muck of notoriety, its conscienceless members having been exposed to have helped themselves with enormous servings of people’s money for personal gain.

After the railroaded impeachment and conviction of Chief Justice Renato Corona, the senator-judges maintained their cozy relationship with Malacañang whose obsession to remove him was known to all.
