Grossly unfair to Customs’ Alvarez

/ 09:34 PM June 03, 2011

With due respect, I find Jess Abrera’s editorial cartoon showing Bureau of Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez sleeping on the job amid rampant smuggling of luxury cars and motorcycles (Inquirer, 5/30/11) grossly unfair and misleading.

Obviously, Abrera was unaware of the fact that the series of smuggling incidents referred to occurred before Alvarez assumed the position of Customs commissioner. Official documents should bear out this claim.

Compared with the two consecutive banner stories of the Inquirer on the same issue, which presented a balanced treatment, certainly the editorial cartoon fell short in terms of accuracy and fairness. Perhaps, Abrera did not bother to read his own paper’s stories.
