The flash floods that recently submerged large parts of Manila and Quezon City were not totally unexpected, and everyone should have been prepared for the eventuality considering that floods caused by heavy rains have practically become an annual experience for commuters and motorists during the rainy season.
The deployment of Libreng Sakay trucks by the Armed Forces of the Philippines to help stranded commuters to get to their destinations during floods showed we are moving in the right direction. We should bury the memories of “Milenyo,” “Ondoy,” and “Habagat” by being prepared for strong typhoons and floods, taking precautionary measures, and heeding the important and sometimes life-saving weather advisories from Pagasa, government agencies and local government officials.
