A permanent gun ban is a key factor in reducing crimes and making the Philippines a more peaceful country to live in. We need such a ban to prevent accidental deaths caused by stray bullets from guns fired by irresponsible individuals as their way of celebrating the New Year.
It is easy for the government to issue a gun ban. A license to own and carry a firearm should be issued only to people who are responsible and highly disciplined. More importantly, law enforcers should be strict, not selective, in implementing the prohibition. They should not violate the law themselves. The gun ban should apply to everyone.
Once and for all, President Aquino, who is a gun enthusiast, must set a good example and lead the call for a gun ban. He is known to have a collection of guns and to participate in shooting competitions. If he must lead by example, he should give up his gun collection and henceforth stay away from shooting competitions. The President’s positive action and support are crucial if the ban must push through.
