Medical mission good for war vets

I was so glad to hear that a medical/dental mission sponsored by the Filipino War Veterans Foundation (Filvets) was scheduled on Oct. 26, 2012, at the gymnasium of Barangay 183, Zone 20 Airman’s Village, Villamor Air Base, Pasay City. I told my father, who is a Filvet member, about the good news. Now in his twilight years, he is getting sickly, and I thought this kind of activity would be of great help to him and our family.

From the time I told him about it, he kept looking forward to the mission, not just for the benefits he expected to derive from the services it would offer to the Filipino war veterans, but also for the past friendships that would be rekindled and, most of all, for the memories of what he and his fellow soldiers did together, the sharing of which always reassures them of their worth as former soldiers. Besides, the mission was open not only to veterans and retired soldiers but also to their dependents.

We would like to thank retired Lt. Gen. Raul Urgello, executive director and operating officer of Filvets, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, and all other institutions involved for making the mission possible. Also the doctors, dentists, nurses and other medical practitioners who provided the services and assistance.

It is always encouraging, indeed reassuring, to feel the warmth and love of organizations like Filvets that cater to the needs of veterans and retirees.
