Tiglao’s opinion is unfortunate and untrue

This letter is in response to the unfortunate and untrue opinion written by Rigoberto Tiglao in the Aug. 30, 2012, edition of the Inquirer. The content of his article is untrue. I never came to the Philippines to object to anything that Chief Justice Meilou Sereno had done. I came to address the Philippine Bar at their invitation.

Generally, I confirm that, in the Fraport case, I saw Justice Sereno not only do a superb job of marshaling the evidence, working hand in hand with the international team, but also demonstrate repeatedly a remarkable knowledge of Philippine law. Her depth of knowledge and immediate reaction with full citations to Philippine legal authority for many Philippine legal issues were exceptional. In addition, her exceptional legal analytical abilities and superb judgment were at all times important to our efforts.

Most of all, for the position she now holds, is her integrity. It is beyond question. She is a principled lawyer who will uphold the rule of law. This is of essential importance. I applaud the President for his selection.
