I liked very much the Aug. 11, 2012 editorial of the Inquirer (“Rainy-day heroes”) which talked about the unsung rainy-day heroes. These are the kind of stories that our fellow citizens ought to hear because they are truly inspiring. They show that in each one of us, no matter how ordinary or lowly regarded, we can find a hero. When the situation calls, anyone can do heroic deeds. It’s up to each person to decide whether or not to heed the call.
We should not wait, however, for rainy days to practice heroic deeds. Any society develops itself and achieves progress because of the virtues of its people. And good deeds become virtues if they are practiced every day. Think of the work ethic of peoples like the Koreans, Japanese, Germans, Swiss, French, English and many others. Think of these peoples’ care for details, industry, thoroughness, punctuality and efficiency. And look how far they have gone in their national development. We should start thinking of practicing virtues heroically as something we typically do daily. This way we develop ourselves and our nation.
