This refers to the article titled “Internet freedom and our OFWs” (Inquirer, 7/22/12) which stated that “surprisingly, the Philippines voted with China and North Korea against Internet freedom,” referring to Resolution A/HRC/20/L.13 on the promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights on the Internet.
Contrary to this assertion, the Philippines, along with 84 other countries, cosponsored the resolution. It was adopted without a vote on July 5, 2012.
The Philippines’ stand on this issue is consistent with the constitutional guarantee on freedom of expression.
This fact is stated on Page 24 of the report of the rapporteur of the 20th Session of the Human Rights Council.
