Jaywalking an idea gone past its time

/ 07:59 PM June 12, 2012

The news item on jaywalking (Inquirer, 6/6/12) saddened me. Jaywalking is a concept that has no place in a civilized society. It was invented by drivers to try to avoid their responsibility to drive in a way that does not endanger other road users, whether inside or outside a metal box.

In particular, drivers should drive in such a way that they would be able to stop in the space they can see to be clear; they are not supposed to rely on others getting out of their way. This means slowing down and taking more care not to hurt others, more particularly, children. It won’t affect journey time–in the city if you go faster you just get to the end of the next queue quicker.

Walking should be viewed with a higher regard. It should be considered as a legitimate means of transport, which is environmentally friendly and good for the health, and causes little congestion. It should be encouraged, not discouraged with long detours, long waits and unjust restrictions.
