Just like Asuncion David Maramba, I applaud Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas for saying in simple terms what the majority of us non-lawyers “connote” in our hearts (“Fariñas’ plain talk,” Inquirer, 6/4/12).
I’ve got to plead guilty, though, for thinking that Fariñas is just a dashing comical man and congressman from a province I want to forget. Surprise of all surprises, he was a bar topnotcher, as a defense lawyer said, and a plain-talking prosecutor who was able to communicate the people’s appreciation of the man who by mere fact of accepting a midnight appointment effectively rendered himself inappropriate for the position of chief magistrate.
I want also to applaud Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano for calling the impeachment court judges, prosecution and defense lawyers and the Filipino people to “not complicate things” and call the charges against Chief Justice Renato Corona for what they really are—plain violation of the SALN law.
May I humbly add: Truth is truth, even if nobody likes or believes in it, and truth is higher than all legalese and judicial rules of court. I hope our people will continue to see the truth of their often incorrect choices and be guided by the truth that really matters!
