We should all be happy that the impeachment trial is finally over. It is now time to heal and move on.
Anent my letters (“Corona’s resignation is the best solution,” Inquirer, 12/21/11; “Super hats of senators” Inquirer, 2/29/12), may I add the following comments:
1. Had Renato Corona resigned as we suggested, he and his family would have been spared the pain, heartache and humiliation—and the Filipino people would have saved P5.8 million (the amount spent by the House of Representatives on the impeachment trial, according to Rep. Florencio Noel, chair of the House Committee on Accounts).
2. My humble view is that the decision of the impeachment court is final and executory and not appealable to anyone. A person convicted by the impeachment court should not stay any minute longer in his/her office.
To remove any doubt and quibbling, I humbly suggest that in the next constitutional amendment, the sentence, “The decision of the Senate sitting as an Impeachment Court shall be final and executory,” should be added to Article 11, Section 3, Paragraph 6 of the Constitution.
