Walking away from boxing with Manolo

With Manolo R. Iñigo I have walked away from boxing, McGeehan’s manly art of modified murder. (“Why I walked away from pro boxing,” Inquirer, 5/11/12)

We cannot remain in the Roman Colosseum, urging gladiators to kill one another—“We who are about to die, salute you”—nor be in medieval times echoing the call of the wild as knights would joust.

During Manny Pacquiao’s last fight, a friend had her birthday party at Century Park, featuring ballroom dancing in a well-attended shindig. Else, I would have been at home where, before, the ads would knock me out sooner than Manny would his foes.

Manny’s partying, gambling, womanizing, preaching, low taxpaying and treating his day job in Congress as a sideline or hobby cannot make him and boxing more popular, I am afraid. And too many people have died.
