Earning the nation’s trust, defending its future

General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., PA, Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines
In times of uncertainty, trust becomes one of the most powerful measures of leadership and institutions. This is why the recent OCTA survey showing high trust (72%) and satisfaction (70%) ratings (for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is more than just a positive number for our organization, but a solid reflection of the growing confidence of the Filipino people in the men and women who stand guard over our nation every single day.
For us in the AFP, this trust is both an honor and a solemn responsibility.
As Chief of Staff, I extend my deepest gratitude to our fellow Filipinos for your continued confidence in your Armed Forces. Your trust fuels our mission. It strengthens our resolve to defend the Republic, uphold our sovereignty, and protect the peace and stability that every Filipino deserves.
But this recognition does not belong to the leadership alone. It belongs to every soldier deployed in remote mountains, every sailor patrolling our seas, every airman securing our skies, and every marine standing watch over key institutions of government. It belongs to the thousands of AFP personnel and reservists who continue to serve quietly, courageously, and selflessly—often far from their families, and often without recognition.
Across the country, our troops continue to deliver decisive gains against threats to national security.
In Negros, government forces recently dealt major setbacks against the New People’s Army through focused military operations that disrupted insurgent activities and protected vulnerable communities. I personally visited the 79th Infantry Battalion to recognize our soldiers whose bravery and professionalism led to the successful conduct of these missions. Their accomplishments embody the discipline, competence, and patriotism that define the modern AFP.
In Mindanao, our operations against violent extremism continue with equal intensity. AFP troops recently neutralized ten members of the Maute-ISIS group, significantly weakening terrorist networks that continue to threaten peace and security in the region. These victories are the result of relentless intelligence work, operational excellence, and close coordination among our security forces.
At sea, our mission remains equally critical.
In the West Philippine Sea, our sailors, marines, and airmen continue to perform their duties with extraordinary courage, professionalism, and restraint amid persistent challenges. Every patrol we conduct, every resupply mission we support, and every presence operation we sustain sends a clear message: the AFP remains firmly committed to defending our sovereignty and protecting our sovereign rights.
Beyond our borders, the AFP continues to strengthen its role as a credible and constructive force for regional peace and stability.
During the recent Balikatan Exercises, Filipino troops demonstrated exceptional operational readiness alongside allied forces. The exercises enhanced our capabilities in maritime security, cyber defense, humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and joint combat operations. More importantly, Balikatan reaffirmed the enduring value of partnerships anchored on mutual respect, interoperability, and shared commitment to peace.
Guided by the theme “Steadfast in Service, United in Purpose,” our troops showcased to the world the professionalism, discipline, and excellence of the Filipino soldier.
The AFP is also actively expanding defense diplomacy and cooperation with our ASEAN partners. I recently had the honor of hosting the ASEAN Chiefs of Defense Meeting, where regional military leaders engaged in meaningful discussions on shared security challenges and regional stability amid evolving global tensions.
In line with our commitment to regional peacebuilding, the AFP likewise deployed officers to Thailand and Cambodia as part of the ASEAN Observer Teams supporting the implementation of peace and monitoring mechanisms in the region. These efforts reflect the growing role of the Philippines—not only as a defender of national interests, but also as a responsible partner in promoting stability and cooperation across Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, here at home, our marines continue to secure vital democratic institutions, including Malacañang, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. They perform these duties with discipline, professionalism, and unwavering respect for the Constitution and the democratic processes we are sworn to protect.
Indeed, the AFP of today is steadily transforming into a more capable, agile, modern, and mission-ready force.
But beyond weapons, equipment, or technology, our greatest strength will always remain the trust and support of the Filipino people.
Trust cannot be demanded. It must be earned—through sacrifice, integrity, professionalism, and genuine service to the nation. And it is this trust that inspires us to do better every single day.
As we move forward, the Armed Forces of the Philippines remains fully committed to serving with excellence, protecting our people, and safeguarding the future of our nation.
Together, let us continue building an AFP that is not only strong in capability, but also strong in credibility: an Armed Forces truly worthy of the trust, respect, and confidence of every Filipino.
After all, trust is earned not by words, but through steadfast service, decisive action, and an unwavering commitment to the Filipino people. The trust of the Filipino people remains the Armed Forces’ greatest strength. And defending that trust means defending the nation’s future every single day.
That is The General Idea.
