Edsa: keep the name

/ 11:38 PM December 11, 2011

I am not in favor of renaming “Epifanio de los Santos Avenue” or “Edsa” into “Cory Aquino Avenue.” Aside from causing dishonor to the hero and his living descendants and the confusion every renaming of a major road creates, future generations might get puzzled to see the term “Edsa” in their history books. Since they would not know what or where Edsa was, they might wonder why a peaceful, world-acclaimed uprising by an unarmed multitude is being called “Edsa Revolution.”

I have another suggestion. If you noticed, there are a couple of bridges spanning the Pasig River that are not yet named after a well-known historical figure. Among them are the “Makati-Mandaluyong Bridge,” the newly built “Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge” near Rockwell, and the “C-5 Road Bridge.” Why not rename one of them as the “Cory Aquino Bridge”?

A newly built road or highway may also be named after the late president.

In this case, I recommend the partially built C-6 Road, which can be renamed as “Cory Aquino Avenue,” if and when it is finished—although, the way the current administration’s public-private partnership program is moving along, this may not happen in the near future.
