Double standard at checkpoints noted

/ 10:36 PM December 02, 2011

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA), an association of established motorcycle manufacturers and assemblers, is gravely concerned about the frequent news on crimes involving motorcycle. These negative reports create a bad image not only for motorcycle manufacturers but also for all players of the motorcycle industry.

We would like to point out that the 1,700 crimes committed by motorcycle-riding tandems from January to October this year is only  0.04 percent of the total 3.5 million registered motorcycles. While the ratio between the motorcycle-associated crimes and the registered motorcycle is minuscule, it is still of utmost concern to MDPPA as the crimes have a negative impact on the motorcycle industry.

MDPPA fully supports the Philippine National Police’s intensified drive against criminals, notably the establishment of PNP checkpoints as a deterrent to crimes. However, the MDPPA is concerned with the apparent discrimination against the two-wheel transport sector at PNP checkpoints. While four-wheel vehicles are subjected to mere visual search, motorcycle riders are thoroughly subjected to unnecessary physical searches, such as the physical removal of U-box contents and verification of documents.

The MDPPA has repeatedly called the attention of the PNP to issue a directive for a fair and equal treatment of four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in all PNP operations. We trust that the PNP leadership will act on this matter immediately by increasing police visibility and using intelligence reports as crime prevention measures.
