Seminars for drivers

09:27 PM November 03, 2011

I THANK God Almighty. If not for my guardian angel, a blue vehicle with Plate No. 894 (I failed to get the letters) would have crushed me to death on Oct. 17, 2011, 10:15 a.m. in downtown Daet. Normally, I ride a tricycle to buy my favorite Inquirer, the newspaper for all seasons.

After making a deposit at the Development Bank of the Philippines’ Daet branch, I walked to the nearest newsstand but on reaching the right corner of J. Lukban and Basit Streets, a speeding vehicle turned left while I was in the center of the road. The driver stepped on the brakes, the vehicle screeched to a stop just a foot beside me. I was outraged, but the driver just sped away without even apologizing. Because I wasn’t able to get the complete plate number, I did not report the incident to the police manning the traffic.

I want to call the attention of the Department of Transportation and Communications, and the Land Transportation Office in particular, to hold seminars on traffic rules and regulations  for drivers of motorcycles, tricycles, cars and other vehicles. They are arrogant whenever they figure in near-accidents. They even shout at innocent passersby to get out of the way.

I also want to call the attention of the PNP provincial director of Camarines Norte, particularly the chief of police of the Daet Police Station, to see to it that the police in downtown Daet should not gather in one corner but they should be assigned to street corners where the “No Left Turn” signs are frequently violated, and to arrest those found violating traffic regulations. Sometimes the signs are nowhere to be found.
