For the longest time, I have repeatedly espoused for the Department of Education (DepEd) to fully complement the home in inculcating the sanctity of marriage and the molding of family values.Evolution of family values (respect, fairness, compassion, love, responsibility, etc.) takes time and consistency in their implementation by the parents/grandparents amongst the children.
For continuity toward institutionalization, DepEd is expected to complement the primarily role of the family/home in the articulation of the said family values (via good manners and right conduct). Affirmation by the teachers and parents for the application of the said family values in the day-to-day interaction in school, as well as in the home, is very important.
These values hopefully, if lived out consistently and properly, by all could result to the possible eradication of society’s evils (corruption, dishonesty, laziness, hatred, anger, etc.) in the various sectors of society (government agencies, private companies, schools, community, etc.).
This advocacy/crusade should be initiated by parents in the family/home for reinforcement by the teachers in school. If done effectively by both institutions, we can rest assured that our children will grow up to become responsible, upright, and compassionate members of our society.
Indeed, there seems to be truth in what Jose Rizal said: “The youth is the hope of the fatherland.”
It is never too late to plant the seed on the values of marriage and family values amongst our children in the home and school—for fruition—in the next generation.
