Change we can look forward to: 5 simple wishes for our next leaders

/ 04:05 AM February 28, 2022

I’m not politically savvy. Despite my silence online, I’m not completely unbothered. I’m as frustrated as other Filipinos who speak a lot on social media. Just like them, I’m aware of what’s happening. I can see it. I can feel it. I can hear it. My heart is also furious and demanding a change we can all look forward to.

But as much as I want to pour my exasperations and my expectations on social media, writing a clear message in a decent manner is a much better and safer way of release. Therefore I’m here writing five simple wishes I want to address to the next leaders who will be ruling our country.

First, please don’t forget that our environment—just like your people—is also an indispensable element that keeps our nation alive. So with all the power and means you have in your hands, do everything you can to protect and rehabilitate our nature. The supertyphoons that hit our country in the previous years and disrupted the lives of many Filipinos are vivid reminders that we need to talk more about our natural resources and do something while there’s still a chance to preserve their shape and beauty. It will only take one comprehensive environmental plan to save millions of lives and livelihoods.

Second, I’m earnestly hoping that the brand new Philippines after the 2022 elections will cast a more just and fairer eye toward the Filipino people, especially when it comes to rule of law. Every Filipino should both be protected and held accountable under the law, so please ascertain to end any exceptions.

Third, I am looking forward to seeing that the new leaders are seriously working on various preparedness plans for unforeseen calamities, pandemics, terrorism, and a lot more. COVID-19, Taal volcano eruption, and Supertyphoon “Rolly” are among the eeriest chapters we don’t wish to happen ever again. I know these disasters are inevitable and sometimes unpredictable, but I’m sure they’re somehow manageable.

Fourth, I’m expecting and fervently praying that the next people to take charge of our government will have pure intentions of serving our country throughout their term. I hope that they will keep their ears wide open to listen to our pleas and give assurance that our calls are heard. In whatever situations we’re going to face ahead, please be the first person to warrant us that things are under control and everything will be fine.

Finally, the wish I desire the most, please be an exponent of our hard-earned democracy and lead the country based on its principles. Fight against discrimination and unite your people regardless of varying beliefs and perspectives. Never suppress the freedom guaranteed by the Constitution and instead make a way to extend it to every single Filipino.

Am I demanding too much for my simple wishes? I don’t think so. Whether you are one of those who takes their wrath out on social media or one of the few like me who much prefers a gentle and peaceful discourse, our voices are valid and deserved to be heeded. After all, we’re all Filipinos who share the same thirst for a brand new change.
