Group in raid on military detachment in Sulu not linked to MNLF
The September 25 attack on a military detachment in Sulu (Inquirer, 9/26/11) by a group of armed men is a very disturbing development in our quest for peace. It should be made clear that the group has never been connected with the Moro National Liberation Front and neither does the MNLF condone such actions.
However, the attack should be considered as a call for the immediate implementation of the peace agreements between the MNLF and the Philippine government. Sadly, the implementation of the accords has dragged for more than 30 years. This could lead some disgruntled people of Mindanao to resort to violence.
The MNLF respects the peace accords and will uphold the same as long as the parties abide by their provisions. The long delay in the negotiation will not create a favorable atmosphere for the peace accords.
