Leni and Isko: An unbeatable tandem, and still the wisest choice

Appealing to Yorme lsko’s magnanimity and unselfish sacrifice is a must: We should not miss or ignore it.

Yorme’s acceptability in Mindanao and the Visayas is uncertain. There is also the nagging thought that he needs to mellow to be an effective chief executive.

For him to make the ultimate sacrifice would follow the heroism of Ninoy Aquino and Jose Abad Santos or even Goyo del Pilar, who gave their lives for us to be free.

Leni and Yorme complement each other; they know the “laylayan” well—the fringes of our social pyramid. Both are charismatic, virtuous, self-effacing, humble, destined for greatness. Theirs is the path of our national salvation.

Both will never abuse, oppress, or suppress contrary views: their record has proven this. Leni has lessened the burden of our health care workers, her vaccination campaign is untiring, her principles uncompromising. Isko has built condos, hospitals, parks, cleaned up the city squalor, inspired the urban poor, and never tolerates corruption or complacency.

Both have never figured in scandals. They protect the rights of children and the unborn, and have never insulted women, or cursed, or made fun of the Pope.

Both completed their college studies. As a lawyer, Leni did not aspire for a higher post, content to support her husband’s career. Yorme grew up worrying about their family’s next meal. Leni is adored by her children, who are highly accomplished individuals themselves. She has no bitter childhood memories to cloud her vision. Yorme was never pummeled in the ring to make him lose his mental balance; he has no huge wealth to flaunt or big money to spend.

What both possess is the passion to serve, to better the lot of their fellow Filipinos.

If elected, Leni would surely roam the countryside, launching livelihood projects, starting pro-poor programs, setting administration policies for economic progress. When elected, Yorme would delve into urban planning, undertake environment mitigation, begin poverty eradication in blighted population centers. Leni would likely not compromise on human rights or tolerate verbal and psychological abuse. Yorme would condemn brutal crimes and merciless killings.

Leni’s diplomatic ways will enhance our relations abroad. Yorme will fight pollution and garbage and ensure clean surroundings, in the process attracting similar global movements and alliances.

Presenting one unified opposition ticket is no longer feasible. But millions remain uncommitted and vigilant, evaluating options, seriously concerned about how their vote will affect our country.

The youth, five or six million of them and the catalyst of the nation, are our brightest hope. They will favor the youthful and energetic. Patriotism infects a people just once. Let us be wise and discerning. In this historic moment, any other choice would be disastrous.
