The story is told about a man who boasted that his dog was a genius in math. Why? Because he said that when he asked his dog what 6 minus 6 was, his dog said nothing!

Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. More than a mathematical problem to be solved, it is a mystery of love to be celebrated in gratitude. We are loved, and we are loved tremendously in more ways than one by the Most Holy and Blessed Trinity.

Some years ago, I celebrated a fiesta Mass in Holy Trinity Parish, Batangas City. As I started my homily, I looked up and saw three doves perched on one of the beams of the church’s roof. I asked everyone to look up, and immediately, a spontaneous applause came from the whole congregation when we realized their message—the presence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in our midst! Yes, God speaks to us in very simple and concrete ways.

By the way, the three doves stayed on during my homily until the end of the Mass. I felt “they” were listening as I spoke about the loving presence of the Holy Trinity in every moment of our lives, in keeping with our Lord’s words: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28, 20).

Is the world ending soon? Some saw the lunar eclipse and the blood moon last May 26 as a bad omen: The eclipse signifying the dark night of COVID-19, and the blood moon signifying the death of so many people. Me? I saw and focused on the beautiful moon, signifying the constancy of God’s love amidst passing tests and trials in this life. Let us continue to “trust the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on the world’s understanding.” (Prov. 3, 5)

With great joy, we received the news this week that Fr. Joseph Durero, SVD, has been elected bishop of Daru-Kiunga, Papua, New Guinea. This humble, soft-spoken, and self-effacing former convent boy and sacristan from Dapa, Surigao, has been a missionary to New Guinea for the past 20 years. Our first SVD Filipino missionaries were sent to New Guinea in 1977. Thank you, Lord, for allowing us Filipinos to share our gift of faith all over the world.

I am very edified and inspired that so many families and groups have online Holy Rosary, and hear online Masses during the pandemic. All over the world people are coming together to be connected to God and to each other. Thank You, Lord, thank You, Mama Mary, for teaching us to pray more, and worry less.

I had a very sad Zoom Mass last May 25 for the souls of Twinkle (43 years old) and husband, Elmer, (47 years old), leaving behind their 10-year-old daughter. There are many times we don’t understand nor can explain why. All we can say is “Thy will be done, Lord.” We believe through it all that God loves us, and God has a plan. May the Lord give us the grace to believe and keep on believing in His love. Amen!

It’s June! The first rains have come. And Christmas is not far behind. Praying with you that the pandemic will be over, soon. Let us not forget that God is powerful, and that God is a God of surprises.
Whatever, let us not leave God out of the picture. He is with us through it all.

Sharing with you the Psalm Prayer from the Breviary (Evening Prayer, Tuesday, Week IV): “Lord, remember your pilgrim Church. We sit weeping at the streams of Babylon. Do not let us be drawn into the current of the passing world, but free us from every evil, and raise our thoughts to the heavenly Jerusalem.”
