Leadership expectations vs reality

In times of crisis, such as what we are facing today, it is reassuring to hear a leader who inspires the people to unite and act together.

Unfortunately, we have a President who has a habit of threatening and attacking his critics, such as Vice President Leni Robredo, detained Sen. Leila de Lima, Sen. Franklin Drilon, the doctors who called for a time-out, and other people.

We have a President who, instead of motivating the citizenry, recommends that gasoline be poured on face masks to disinfect them. We have a President who considers as competition the various initiatives of the Office of the Vice President and who tells her “mamatay ka na.”

I do not expect this President to be like former British prime minister Winston Churchill or South African president Nelson Mandela. But, at least, he should be more sensible and focus on the pandemic that must be conquered.
