The necessity of luck

One can suppose that Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. had no intention of bringing his organization into disrepute. Perhaps he was exploring a more political career and saw the opportunity of echoing the President’s sentiments with rhetorical flourishes of his own. That was careless; no beginner’s luck there.

Even well-placed and seasoned hacks can get unlucky. For example, Solicitor General Jose Calida is now dissociated in many minds from credibility. What he can count on, at the most, is a mesmerized public stare at a master contortionist exhibiting the latest trick. But the real experts are just across the waters — or so we thought, for they are already here, bearing gifts.
